Hack & Slash is a modest but mighty library of 200 sword and blade combat sounds.

Ideal for adding visceral excitement to any game with combat involving sharp pointy things: swords, knives, blades and axes, the sounds will sharpen up side-scrolling metroidvanias, immersive 3D fantasy action RPGs and everything between!

Easily add polish to your game with 200 ready to use sounds across the following categories:
  • Slash (96 sounds)
  • Whoosh (45 sounds)
  • Metal Impacts (6 sounds)
  • Weapon Clash (17 sounds)
  • Gore (18 sounds)
  • Cinematic (10 sounds)
  • Handling (7 sounds)
  • Slash Impact (3 sounds)

Files: 202
Format: 24-bit 48kHz wav
Metadata: Basic Soundminer (no additional description)

I had planned on releasing the library as an 'early access' preview because I'd love to record and design a wider variety of sounds: different types and size of metal, mace & chain, anime style effects, etc. but realistically it will be a while until this is possible.

If I do get around to designing these sounds they'll be added as free updates for existing owners (and the library price will likely increase)

I'm open to suggestions for content (comment below or send me an email!) I'll do my best to include any that fit nicely into the pack.

Awesome pack! If you are viewing this as a potential customer all I can say is imho Shapeforms produces some of the most high quality usable sounds you'll find on itch, and even in 'early access' this is easily worth a buy.

That said you should be aware that it's mostly 'slashy' (ie.: sword) stuff for now. And most of the sounds are a tad bit 'light/bright' sounding. You can easily process them to create a 'heavier' sound though, so it's not a huge deal but you should be aware of it.

In terms of feedback:

I would like to see hammer-style sounds and more heavy sounding impacts. (I think this would be covered by your plans for future updates)

I would like to see some more 'pure' gore impact sounds: Almost all the impact sounds either have 'wet gore' added to them, or 'metal woosh' added to them. I think "Gore Splat Stab Poke" is closest to what I'm imagining here.

I would like to see a bit more variance in the length, specifically on the shorter end: A lot of them seem to run for around 300-500ms – incl. about 100-250ms runoff. I'd like to see some more impacts / overall sounds that finish right around 250ms, with minimal / no reverberation or runoff. The opposite would also be nice – longer, more 'epic' sounds – but less crucial as the shorter/current sounds could be processed to sound more epic.

Either way, great job! And looking forward to any updates (whether soon or in a year lol)

Thanks for taking the time to write an overview/review and provide feedback, I genuinely appreciate it! It's good, actionable feedback, giving me something concrete to work towards.

Different 'brightness' of sounds is one area I'd like to expand upon, though for now they do lean a little brighter like you say to provide the most flexibility. Heavy hammers would be a nice addition for sure! I'm hopeful I'll be able to source and record more material eventually, and for some suggestions I may not need new recordings at all – in the meantime though I hope the library still proves quite useful (and fun to use!) for bread and butter slashy sounds.
